Free Character Counter and UTF-8 Byte Counter
Paste text into the box above to count characters with spaces, characters without spaces, words, sentences, lines, and UTF-8 bytes. The target tracker is useful for essays, bios, product descriptions, meta descriptions, resumes, and social posts with a character limit.
| Count | What it measures |
|---|---|
| Characters | Every character, including spaces and line breaks |
| No spaces | Characters after whitespace is removed |
| UTF-8 bytes | The encoded byte length of your text |
| Words | Groups of text separated by whitespace |
Why can character count and byte count differ?
A character counter measures text length, while a byte counter measures encoded data size. In UTF-8, ASCII letters and numbers usually use one byte. Many non-Latin characters use multiple bytes, and emoji can use even more. For a focused result, open the UTF-8 byte counter.
Frequently asked questions
Is my text uploaded?
No. Counting happens locally in your browser. The text is not sent to this site's server.
Does the no-spaces count remove line breaks?
Yes. Spaces, tabs, and line breaks are all removed from the no-spaces count.
Can I track a specific character limit?
Yes. Choose a preset or enter any target. The progress bar compares your current character count with that limit.
